There is just too much beer in the world to only taste twice a month. In the spirit of more is better the Blind Tiger podcast team has decided to add samplesodes to the podcast lineup. These mini-episodes will feature only tastings of hopefully unique or exotic beer, often on location to keep your Blind Tiger intake at a more regular interval.
This episode Mike, Jesse, and myself traveled up to Ephrata, Pennsylvania to share a few pints with the men behind the newest brewery in Ephrata, Black Forest Brewery. We were lucky enough to sit down with brewery owner Bob Harter and his son Ryan to talk about the adventure in opening a brewery.
Bob and Ryan clearly have a passion for good beer. Their new facility combines a sense of stainless steel newness with an impressive rustic wooden feeling. Their modest bar and brewpub is the perfect size for that element of coziness and comfort that can make a place feel homey while being spacious enough to keep you from feeling cramped.
The construction was gorgeous. The smell of the wood was inviting. There was no craftsman industrial vibe here. Instead it fit splendidly into a city like Ephrata with an intense pride in its lengthy history. It felt more like a tavern pub than a modern bar despite having all the modern amenities.
Sadly we were there before the beer was ready though Bob had just finished a brew day so the brewery smelled of grains and hops. Every craft beer lovers dream.
I don’t want to spoil the interview but Ryan clearly knows his beer and is inventing recipes at his home back in California while Bob seems to be keeping to an East Coast philosophy. I am excited to see if they blend the two styles into unique beers.
The brewery opened in the middle of the month and we will be back in January to enjoy their beer. But for now satiate yourself with the men behind the brewery and consider a stop up for some beer.
