This week the Blind Tiger crew was able to extend some very warm Lancastrian hospitality to Brandon Wurtz and Michael Roberts known colloquially as The Brews Travelers.
For those unawares these gentleman are traveling the continental United States for a full year attempting to enjoy at least a single brewery every day for a full, unbroken 365 day streak. Having departed for their first brewery on January 1st, 2014 they have spent each day drinking, writing, and traveling.
We caught them right after the first quarter of their journey was done and they were in great spirits, had a high confidence of completion and had some impressive stats under their belts. Check them out.
- 938 unique beers tasted
- 109 breweries visited
- 14+ states visited
- 6,680 miles driven
- 1 round of disc golf played
We have followed their progress since they left Lancaster for the rest of central Pennsylvania and beyond. While we weren’t there to enjoy their 1000th beer I did see the impossibly rare and prized selection they chose on untappd.
Brandon and Michael were the best sort of craft beer drinkers. They were visiting breweries, bars, and bottle shops looking for fun events, great stories to tell, and getting the beer history and culture of places all around the United States. Their quest is not about drinking more beer than anyone else (though that is a convenient side-effect) or chasing down the white whales of the craft beer scene but to enjoy good beer with great people all around the country.
We were fortunate to get their company for two whole nights and hear the silly, the weird, and the downright heartfelt stories of their journey thus far. They spoke of the south’s love of their impressive beards with references to Duck Dynasty, to states that really only have a small handful of very new craft breweries, to love, support, and acceptance everywhere they went.
The guys have relied a lot on the kindness of strangers to put a warm meal in their bellies and a soft bed under their backs at night and have found craft beer drinkers to be very welcoming to opening their homes and their hearts to them. It was deeply refreshing to hear that one can still rely on strangers from all over these united states of ours to be truly saintly when it comes to helping people.
Listen to the episode to really get a sense of these guys. A few Lancaster friends got to meet this dynamic duo who have managed three months crammed in a minivan while only fostering a stronger bond of friendship. And if you can send some support their way please do. They were amazing house guests and great company to share a beer with.
The have declared many a time that this journey is not about fame, it isn’t about fortune, it is just about an experience and craft beer. They are toying a book when they return but have pledged that any proceeds gained from such an endeavor would go to improving the craft beer culture of their home port of Dallas, Texas. Gentleman in the best sense of the word.
We wish them the best of luck in their travels and are eager to meet them again when their journey is done.
Visit their website, follow them for updates on Twitter, and friend them on Untappd. They are really doing their homework when it comes to local breweries so you’ll get a first hand look at places right around the corner that you may not know and live vicariously as they travel to amazing craft brew spots thousands of miles away.
