Episode 44: Christmas Presents

Hello and welcome to the Blind Tiger Podcast recorded on the 15th of December 2014.  In this episode Mike, Jesse, and myself gathered in our studio to celebrate both Christmas and our last episode of the year.  But we were not alone in the studio.  We were joined by Greg Orth of Craft Tastings whose business is chocolate and beer.  Greg’s goal in life is to find thee best pairings of chocolate with beer.  Needless to say this was  Christmas present from Greg to us and we were more than happy to open this present a little early.

We also spend a little time discussing the “end of craft beer’s coolness” now that it is server on airplanes.  Or something like that anyway.

Given that this is our Christmas special our opening this week had to deal with the man behind the magical day who wasn’t born in a manger; Santa Claus.  Thus our opening question this week is, If you were to bribe Santa for better presents with beer and cookies, what would it be and why?

Craft Beer Interviews: Craft Tastings

We were joined this episode by Greg Orth of Craft Tastings LLC.  Greg creates an amazing craft beer experience by pairing high quality chocolates with delicious craft beer.  While Greg openly admits that anyone can pair chocolate and beer for a good experience what he does different is create an amazing pairing experience.  Greg does his homework often trying 30+ different chocolates to find the one that doesn’t just taste good with its beer but the chocolate that creates a pairing that elevates both the beer and the chocolate.  As Greg puts it himself, “1 + 1 = 3″.  Or, in a much more fun parlance, he is looking to create a “mouthgasm.”

Greg had us try a number of amazing pairings that truly impressed.  While Mike and I thought we could produce our own pairings that would taste great Greg’s combinations put our concoctions to shame.  From chocolates with a strong curry flavor to orange peel to just regular milk chocolate Greg’s pairing were undeniably far beyond your average pairings.  As you’ll hear, Jesse was enthralled.

The pairings were as follows:

  • Lindt Extreme Orange – Ommegang Witte
  • Vosges Mo’s Milk Bar – Boxcar Brewing Mango Ginger
  • Vosges Naga Bar – Otto’s Nittany Pale Ale
  • Wilbur Milk Chocolate Buds – Victory Hop Ranch
  • Sartori MontAmore – Victory Hop Ranch
  • Chuao Firecracker ChocoPod – Free Will Coffee Oatmeal Brown (COB)
  • Hershey’s Special Dark – Troeg’s Mad Elf
