Episode 22: Presidential Beers

IMG_1606This is the 22nd episode of the Blind Tiger Podcast, recorded on February 12, 2014.  In this episode Mike, Jesse, and I gathered together in our studio to celebrate the men who led our country in the only way we know how, having beers in their honor.  Mike and I challenged each other to find beers that honor the great Presidential men to pit in single combat.

Our beer news this week is a bit long but worth the investment as it comes complete with the opportunity to try a delicious new beer from Tröegs, the Cultivator.  We discuss the FDAs possible new rule to make breweries that sell or donate grain “Animal Feed Producers” as well as the semi-controversial decision of Budweiser buying Blue Point Brewery.

Most importantly though due to friend of the show Kati, we have the opportunity to stop talking about the famous, number one rated double IPA in the world Heady Topper and actually review it on the show.  Make sure to check out what Jesse’s thought are on this highly rated, highly sought after beer as this is his first taste ever.

This episode we start out with the following question to get our panel chatting.  The question is: If you were to dedicate a beer to a president, which president would it be and why?

Rare Beer Snob Selection: Heady Topper Edition

Jesse posed a question last episode as to what was this beer that Mike and I keep discussing called Heady Topper.  It was a fair question from someone not as obsessed with the American craft beer culture.  In a bout of amazing coincidence we managed to get ourselves a can of the nearly mythically highly rated beer from Vermont.  Beer Advocate rates is as a perfect 100 with the brothers themselves scoring it at 96.  The beer is routinely rated as the worlds best double IPA and often considered to be one of the possible best beers in the world.  Brewed by The Alchemist, a small brewery in Vermont it is the single focus of this brewery.  They craft this 75 IBU 8% ABV double IPA with the all the care and attention in the world.  The quality and consideration that goes into this beer is obvious.  Alchemist describes their hop obsession thusly: “We love hops – that’s why our flagship Double IPA, Heady Topper, is packed full of them. Heady Topper was designed to showcase the complex flavors and aromas these flowers produce. The Alchemist has been brewing Heady Topper since 2003. This Double IPA is not intended to be the strongest or most bitter DIPA. It is brewed to give you wave after wave of hop flavor without any astringent bitterness. We brew Heady Topper with a proprietary blend of six hops – each imparting its own unique flavor and aroma. Take a big sip of Heady and see what hop flavors you can pick out. Orange? Tropical Fruit? Pink Grapefruit? Pine? Spice? There is just enough malt to give this beer some backbone, but not enough to take the hops away from the center stage.”
